Both houses from the front garden and driveway. Maison Paulette is on the left.

Set on the edge of the village of Cartigny amid the fields of Picardie, Maison Paulette provides a pleasant base for your exploration of the Somme battlefields and the Circuit de Souvenir of the Great War, 1914-18.

The house is to the left of the home of its English owners Robert and Kate, who are resident all year. It has two double bedrooms and facilities to provide comfortable self-catering accommodation for four or five people. Wi-fi use is included.

Thiepval Memorial to the missing

We are close to Péronne and the Circuit de Souvenir, the 1916 Somme Battlefield route. Maison Paulette is well-placed to reach the important sites of the 1917 and 1918 military actions, and the Historial de la Grande Guerre – the famous Great War museum – is a 10-minute drive away. The TGV station serving Lille and Paris CDG is 20 minutes away by car.

Up to two dogs are welcomed, as long as they are kept off the furniture and bedding. There is no smoking indoors, but feel free to do so while strolling in the garden – or even while borrowing one of our bikes, if you have the flair for it. And if you have your own bikes, we have lockups you can put them in.

Taking the tour:

Maison Paulette’s entrance hall has a high ceiling and tiled floor, with a door going through to the sitting room, a door to the kitchen, and stairs to first floor. Please note – the stairs are original and therefore steeper than most English designs.

The sitting room is bright and airy, and overlooks the front garden to the south and side garden to the west. An archway takes you through to to the dining room, or a door to the kitchen. There is a settee, two easy chairs, oak drawers, cupboards and a new wood-burning stove. A Freesat English-language TV means you will never miss an episode of Downton Abbey (unless you want to).

The dining room has a window overlooking the side garden, a door to kitchen, and an extending dining room table with six chairs.

The newly-fitted kitchen has a four-ring gas cooker and oven, fridge and freezer, microwave oven and washing machine. It overlooks the back garden, where wood pigeons are lured to photo ops in the bird bath.

The shower room is newly tiled and accessed from kitchen. It also has a downstairs loo.

Mount the stairs, pause briefly on the landing, and choose from the following:

Bedroom one has a double bed, matching French Art Deco wardrobe and bedside cabinet, a wash hand basin and shaver point. There is a large Velux roof light facing west over the side garden.

Bedroom two has two single beds, built-in wardrobe and chests of drawers, and another west-facing rooflight. There is also a foldout bed if needed.

The bathroom has a newly-fitted bath, WC and wash-hand basin and a shaver point. This one’s Velux roof light faces north.

Finally, the large front garden is available to visitors, with shrubs and flowers, garden furniture and barbecue. There is off-street parking for your car, with double iron gates in the front wall of the garden.
